COMIC Relief is celebrating 25 years of helping those most in need.
But it’s not just in Africa where buying a red nose makes a difference.
Since 1998, Comic Relief has approved over £200m of grants in England and funded over 10,000 projects.
One of the projects is No Limits which offers advice, counselling, advocacy and support to young people across Hampshire.
In Portsmouth, Comic Relief has helped fund independent visitors to children in foster care, giving them the chance to speak to someone outside the care system.
The charity also offers the Just For You service to young people in care who are going through issues they need help understanding.
And in Fareham, there is the Breakout youth group for young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or are questioning their sexuality or gender.
Liz Carter, who runs the charity, said: ‘Comic Relief has over the years been a massive supporter of No Limits – especially around young people’s mental health.
‘The money we received was used to pay for upskilling our staff team to focus on mental health issues.
‘A quarter of young people suffer mental health issues at some time and people don’t always see that.’
Other charities and voluntary organisations can now apply for a pot of £50,000 of funding from Comic Relief.
Groups eligible to apply need to:
Be working in a disadvantaged or deprived area within the specified boundaries
Be a small local group with an income of less than £100,000 (in the last year) run by local people
Grants will not be awarded to:
Individuals
Statutory organisations, including PCTs and schools
Groups which are not constituted
Grants will not be awarded to:
Fund buses, minibuses or other community transport schemes
Fund building costs including access adaptations to buildings.
