WE NEED to support our local pubs to keep them alive, the local branch of the Campaign for Real Ale has said.

It comes as we hold our competition to choose the best pub in Portsmouth. The News received hundreds of nominations for dozens of pubs and now it’s time for you to vote for your favourite.

All you need to do is pick your best local from the shortlist, left, and fill out the form below.

Once the votes are in, the top three pubs will go before a panel of judges to decide the winner.

Graham Church, social secretary for the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire branch of CAMRA, said the competition is good for pubs across the city.

‘It encourages people to visit pubs. They are in danger. It’s much better to have people in pubs than drinking at home with drink bought from supermarkets.

‘It’s good to recognise them by giving them awards because there are some very good and deserving great pubs in Portsmouth.’

The winning pub will be presented with the Portsmouth Pub of the Year trophy by editor of The News Mark Waldron.

He said: ‘There are some great pubs on the shortlist for Pub of the Year. I don’t know how the judges will be able to choose a winner but I look forward to seeing who makes it to the top three to face our judging panel.’

To make sure your local is in with a chance fill out the form in The News today with the name of your favourite pub from the list on the left of the page and post it to: Pub of the Year, Promotions Department, The News Centre, Hilsea, Portmsouth PO2 9SX. Voting closes at midnight on May 31.
