Conan Doyle’s first prize

THERE can’t be many people who own Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first editions – but Trevor Austin has won a brand-new copy of the Sherlock Holmes creator’s never-before-published first book.
As this year’s Portsmouth BookFest drew to a close Mr Davis accepted his prize from the organisers – the head of Portsmouth City Council’s library service Lindy Elliott and the owner of the Hayling Island Bookshop Marie Telford.
Discovered in the archives of the British Library, Conan Doyle’s The Narrative of John Smith was published for the first time this year and its editors visited Portsmouth during the Bookfest.
Receiving his limited edition copy – worth £100 in the shops – at Portsmouth’s Central Library Mr Austin, from Bedhampton, said: ‘It’s a lovely looking thing, I can’t wait to give it a proper read.’
The compeition asked what position Conan Doyle had played when he played football in Portsmouth.
He was a goalkeeper.
