WITH a lightsaber in his hands, it looked like the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth was preparing for a showdown with Darth Vader.

Instead Councillor Frank Jonas wielded the prop about on a stage before turning on the Christmas lights in Cosham by holding down a lever with Rob McVeigh, who is starring in The Kings Theatre’s Christmas panto Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Santa.

Scores of families got in the festive mood during the event, which saw performances from local dancers and a competition to see who could wrap their mum in toilet paper first.

A stunning display of fireworks rounded things off. Jemma McAvery, 22, of Portsmouth Road, Cosham, turned out with her children Tia, three, Isla, one, and mum Karen Hughes, 44.

Jemma said: ‘I really enjoyed myself and the atmosphere was great.’

Cllr Jonas added: ‘Despite the cold everyone was happy and got in the community spirit.’
