THE question of whether fracking is on the cards for the Westbourne area will be discussed at a public meeting.

The event will include a film on what fracking is, speakers from Frack-Free Solent, and an update on Markwells Wood.

The wood, in Forestside, near Rowlands Castle, is currently being drilled for oil.

But some fear energy companies could one day explore the potential for shale gas.

A statement from Frack-Free Solent said: ‘To be profitable shale gas exploitation requires major industrial complexes at every wellhead.

‘In the next few years Westbourne could become part of the new UK “gas lands” with the surrounding countryside becoming industrialised.’

The meeting takes place at the Baptist Chapel, North Street, Westbourne, from 10am to midday on January 25.
