VOLUNTEERS are needed to help make a town’s first ever festival a success.

The Leigh Park Festival committee is looking for support for the three-day event over the May bank holiday weekend.

The popular carnival will remain and will be the highlight of the festival but there will be events added on the days either side.

On Friday, May 24 a battle of the bands competition will take place on Stockheath Common and involve musicians from across the area.

On Saturday, the traditional carnival will take place, possibly with a procession led by the carnival queen from Park Parade shops to Stockheath Common.

There will be the usual fun activities and stalls.

On Sunday, the festival will be rounded off with a car boot sale on the common.

Councillor Faith Ponsonby, who represents Battins ward in Leigh Park, said: ‘The joint chairwomen of the committee are Helen Dunning and Helen Bolton who both have shops in Park Parade.

‘They are very dynamic and full of ideas, but we need volunteers to help see them through.’

The next committee meeting is February 6 at The Hub, Park Parade, from 11am.

The first fundraising event is a fashion show on February 9 at 7.30pm at Leigh Park Community Centre, in Dunsbury Way.
