A COUNCILLOR has warned residents that there will be '˜a huge battle' ahead if developers decide to appeal against plans for 1,100 homes in Stubbington should a council reject them.

Councillor Shaun Cunningham, who represents Portchester East on Fareham Borough Council has said that residents should be prepared for an appeal from Hallam Land Management if the council’s planning committee reject the developer’s plans for the homes this summer.

The developer has previously had to revise its plans for the site in Peak Lane from 1,550 homes down to 1,100 due to neighbouring residents’ anger that the proposals would add to congestion in the area and that it was being built on green fields.

Cllr Cunningham said: ‘There will be a huge battle ahead if the council rejects the plans.

‘We have got to work together, the residents and the council, to make sure that the committee has all the facts and can make the right decision.

‘My gut feeling tells me that they will appeal if it gets rejected.’

The application also includes an 80-bed care home, a health centre, primary school, pub, allotments and a new road to link Gosport Road with Peak Lane and new pedestrian and cycle paths.

Cllr Cunningham believes that the application is linked to the 6,000 Welborne development in that the delays on house building for the project could lead to arguments in favour of other large developments, such as the Newlands application.

Cllr Sean Woodward, executive leader of the council added: ‘This plan is totally contrary to the local plan.

‘I do not like it at all, it is completely unacceptable.

‘I have no doubt it will go to appeal if it gets rejected by the committee.’

The original application had also faced a 2,000 signature petition opposing it before the number of houses was cut down.

Hallam Land Management did not reply to requests for comment.

The application is likely to be determined later this summer.
