AN AIRGUN is being used to smash the windows of cars in a worrying spate of attacks.

Police are urging residents to be vigilant after an airgun or BB gun was used to break the windows of cars parked in Tilmore Road and Tilmore Gardens, Petersfield.

Police said it could spark an armed response as the airgun might be confused for a real gun. It is thought children are the culprits behind the criminal damage.

PC Duncan Filer, from Petersfield Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: ‘I would also appeal to parents of children who have these sorts of weapons to pay close attention to their usage.

‘The message for youngsters and parents is that it’s difficult, even for firearms experts, to distinguish between a fake gun and a real weapon from a distance.’ Call police on 101.
