A PLEA has been launched for the safe return of a 3ft high Angel Gabriel stolen from a Nativity scene at a market.

Staff first noticed the figure was missing from Commercial Road in Portsmouth on Sunday.

A tweet posted yesterday by the Town Centre Managers read: ‘Missing person alert. The Angel Gabriel has disappeared from the City Centre market. Any info on whereabouts appreciated. #portsmouth #angel’

Joanne Peak manages the market for Global Events. She said: ‘It’s a shame because I’ve noticed a group of children looking at the Nativity and it’s not there, it’s quite sad.

‘There’s security on at night times and during the day we are looking out for it.

‘We just want it to be returned, no questions asked. Just hand it back to us. It’s not fair on Jesus.’

Anyone who sees the statue is asked to return it to Portsmouth Central police station in Winston Churchill Avenue.
