FRESH calls are being made for witnesses following an arson attack at a flat.

The resident, a man aged in his 40s, was asleep inside the ground-floor property in Waverley Road, Southsea, when the blaze started.

Luckily he woke up and managed to escape through a back door. He was not hurt in the fire, which happened shortly before 1am on May 24.

Now detectives are appealing for help to trace a white man in his 30s, about 5ft 11in tall, who was seen outside the flat shortly before the fire.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: ‘This could have been a far more serious situation because one man was asleep inside the flat when the fire started. We would like to thank everyone who has given information to the police already.’

Detectives are asking for more witnesses to help find the man described in this appeal.

Call Portsmouth CID at Fratton station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
