POLICE are reminding people to keep their homes safe if they are going on holiday.

The warning comes after an attempted break-in at a home in Heaton Road, Gosport.

While the owners of the home were on holiday, somebody tried to force their way into the house. It happened between 8.30pm on August 10 and 8.45am the next day.

PC Nicki Wisdom, from Gosport police station, said: ‘The occupants had taken precautions to protect their home while on holiday.

‘Family members were visiting frequently and were therefore able to quickly notice the attempted break-in and secure the property.’

PC Wisdom is offering advice on how to secure homes before going on holiday.

Steps include making your home look lived in by using automatic timer switches to turn lights and radios on, cancelling milk and newspaper deliveries and cutting the lawn before you go.

You could also ask a friend or relative to collect your mail, park on your driveway, open and close curtains and water the garden. Lock all windows and doors and use alarms, while making sure valuable items are not on view.

Anyone with information about the burglary in Heaton Road should call PC Wisdom on 101.
