They look like any other shoppers at the supermarket self-service till - except that they’re carrying guns.

This picture of two armed police officers taking a break to buy food was sent to us by a reader of our Facebook page and demonstrates how the routine sight of armed officers in public is becoming more regular.

The photograph, taken at the Morrisons supermarket in Portsmouth City Centre, comes amid calls for more armed police officers to be deployed in the city.

The chairman of the Hampshire Police Federation. John Apter, says that despite Hampshire Police training more armed officers to be based in the city, the number is still not enough.

He was speaking after the Metropolitan Police announced plans to bring in 600 additional marksmen in London to combat any potential terror threat in the capital.
