TWO men have been arrested after a powerboat owned by a famous round-the-world sailor was stolen.

Detectives have questioned two men after the theft of the £66,000 Rigid Inflatable Boat at Northney Marina, Hayling Island.

As reported, the 30ft boat belonged to Gosport-based sailor Alex Thomson, who became the youngest skipper ever to win the 1998/1999 Clipper Race.

The theft of the boat hampered the sailor’s plans for Cowes Week on the Isle of Wight earlier this month.

The theft happened at about 8.30pm on Tuesday, August 9 and The News published CCTV footage of the boat being stolen.

A 42-year-old man, from Hayling Island, and a 52-year-old man from Hedge End, were arrested on suspicion of theft and bailed until November 16, pending further inquiries.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
