THE body of a man has been washed up on the beach at Hayling Island.
A member of the public dialled 999 after discovering the decomposed body on the beach close to the junction of Southwood Road and Bosmere Road, Eastoke.
Police were called at 8.56am today and cordoned off the scene for a short time while the body was recovered.
Detectives believe the body may have been in the water for some time before being washed ashore.
Police are keeping an open mind as to how the man may have died and ended up in the sea.
A spokesman for Hampshire Police said: ‘Police have recovered the washed up body of a man on the beach at Hayling Island.
‘The decomposed body was found by a member of the public on the beach near to the junction of Southwood Road and Bosmere Road.
‘The body is that of a white man thought to be aged between 50 and 60 years of age.
‘Initial accounts suggest the body may have been in the sea for some time before being washed ashore.
‘Detectives are now carrying out lines of inquiry to establish the man’s identity.
‘There are not yet able to state whether the man’s death is being treated as suspicious.’
