A man’s body has been found on Portsdown Hill.
Police were called to shortly before 3pm today following a call from a member of the public who had found a body near to the Candy’s Pit viewpoint just east of the Churchillian pub.
A Hampshire Police spokesman said: ‘Officers attended the scene and the body of a man was found. The circumstances surrounding this death are currently being investigated.’
This afternoon there was a large police presence at the scene. An area of woodland on the hill, south of the road between the George pub and the Churchillian pub, had been cordoned off.
There are several sheer chalk face drops within the woooded area but it was not immediately clear where exactly the body had been found or how the man had died.
At around teatime, police lifted the cordon around the woods but did not immediately give any further details.
