FIREFIGHTERS from Fareham Fire Station went to assist a rescue of a 15-year-old out who was stranded in mud.

The teenager found himself stuck in the mud at Itchen River near the River Park Leisure Centre in Winchester after stepping in to retrieve a football at about 4.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters pulled him out using a mud lance.

Fire crews from Winchester and Redbridge stations and an ambulance were at the scene. Fareham station watch manager Simon Whelan said: ‘He stepped in to get a football out of the river and pretty much got up to his thigh in mud and couldn’t get out again.’
