A BUSINESSMAN who destroyed a £45,000 TV with a hammer in a drunken rampage just before a crunch football match has been jailed for six months.

John Richards, 44, smashed up the 103in flat screen TV at The Globe in Chichester – thought to be the only pub in the country to have one.

He destroyed the £1,500 TV, smashed a window, made a hole in a wall and hit a customer over the head with the tool.

Police later asked how drunk he had been on a scale of one to 10. Richards, who had previously been banned from the pub, answered: ‘12.’

Richards, of Caspian Close, Fishbourne, had spent the day drinking after collecting post from his former business premises near the pub.

But as he walked past The Globe at around 6.15pm he thought the manager was laughing at him, Chichester Crown Court heard. He returned to his old office to get the hammer before heading back to the pub.

Customers were gathering to watch Chelsea play Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final when the attack happened on April 18.

Richards admitted four counts of criminal damage and one of assault by beating. The hammer was forfeited and he was banned from licensed premises for two years.
