A THIEF who was caught growing cannabis at his home has been ordered to do community service.

Christopher Smith stole 10 cans of Stella Artois lager and a shopping basket, worth £20, from the Co-op in St James’s Road, Southsea.

When police went to his address in Dunsmore Close, Southsea, they found he was growing eight cannabis plants.

The 29-year-old was due to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court earlier this month but failed to turn up.

When Smith, of Dunsmore Close, Southsea, eventually appeared before the magistrates he pleaded guilty to theft, cultivating a class B drug and failing to appear at court.

He will have to carry out 60 hours of unpaid work in the community and pay £40 in costs and £20 in compensation.
