A BENEFIT cheat has been ordered to repay just under £10,000.

Alan Brewer claimed money in jobseekers’ allowance and council tax benefit.

But the 58-year-old was not entitled to the financial support because he secretly had savings stashed away.

Brewer, of Glamorgan Road, Catherington, pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to notify the authorities of a change in circumstances and two of making a false statement to make a gain when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

He committed the offences in 2007 and 2008.

Magistrates ordered Brewer to pay £9,253.83 in compensation to the Department for Work and Pensions and £100 in court costs.

He was given four months to pay up.
