TWO benefit cheats have been ordered to do community work after falsely claiming more than £12,000.

Philip Salton, 49, of Wall Cottage Drive, Chichester, admitted two charges of failing to notify Chichester District Council that he was doing self-employed work while claiming benefits. He received a £5,470 in housing benefit and £1,229 in council tax benefit to which he was not entitled.

Worthing Magistrates’ Court also heard that Leslie Rowland, 64, of Montague Road, Chichester, did not declare all of the household savings.

Rowland, who pleaded guilty, was overpaid £4,078 in housing benefit and £1,249 in council tax benefit.

Salton was sentenced to undertake 80 hours unpaid work. Rowland was ordered to undertake 60 hours unpaid work.
