Mrs Singleton’s son-in-law Simon Loveday said he was appalled.

The 36-year-old, of Landport, said: ‘We are devastated.

‘They have no idea what hurt they have caused.

‘We are church-going people and it is not for us to judge why they have done it. Please just bring it back.’

Mr Loveday said the bench cost £1,000. He said he thought more than one person was involved in the theft.

‘It had to be a group because it was hauled over a 5ft-high fence with metal spikes on the top,’ he said.

Mr Loveday said Mrs Singleton, who was 60 when she died of lung cancer, had been a member of the church community for 40 years and had done a lot of charity work for the church and the community.
