YOBS went on a rampage causing serious damage to park memorial trees.

Ten trees were attacked with either an axe or large knife in Florence Park, Chichester.

Experts believe many of the trees may die as a result of the attack and will have to be replaced by Chichester District Council at a cost of around £1,000. The damage was discovered by Friends of Florence Park over several days last week.

Councillor Eileen Lintill, who is responsible for leisure and wellbeing, said: ‘I’m appalled by this despicable act of wanton vandalism.

‘Some of the trees are memorial donations from the community so people will be very upset about this.

‘If anyone knows who has done this we would urge them to come forward and tell us.’

Mick Gore, the council’s parks and green spaces officer, said: ‘About 10 trees are showing signs of damage.

‘Many of the trees that have been damaged will not survive which is a real shame.’

Sussex Police have been made aware of the damage.

The council’s community wardens will be monitoring the park for any more damage. Anyone with information is urged to contact Chichester District Council on 01243 534799.
