A MAN has appeared in court charged with murdering a retired police officer at his Portsmouth home.

Stephen Cowdrey, 49, gave no indication of plea when he appeared at Winchester Crown Court.

Cowdrey, of St Augustine Road, Southsea, is accused of murdering 87-year-old Stanley Carter.

Police found Mr Carter at his home in Greenwood Avenue, Cosham, shortly before 10pm on Sunday.

Cowdrey was arrested at Portsmouth Central police station shortly after 11pm the same evening and later charged with murdering Mr Carter between September 11 and Sunday.

The coroner has been informed of preliminary results of a post-mortem examination held to establish how Mr Carter died.

However the cause of his death has not yet been revealed.

Judge Graham Cottle remanded Cowdrey in custody.

He is due to reappear at the court on November 21.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information about the circumstances surrounding the pensioner’s death to come forward.

They particularly want to hear from anyone with information about any ‘suspicious behaviour or disturbances’ in Greenwood Avenue between Friday and Sunday.

Anyone with information should call Hampshire Major Investigation Team at Fratton station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
