A MAN in his 80s found dead at a home in Portsmouth has been named.

Officers discovered the man, who has been named locally as Stanley Carter, known as Stan, at the property in Greenwood Avenue, Cosham, shortly after 10pm yesterday.

Detectives who have launched a murder probe into his death have now appealed for anyone with information about ‘suspicious behaviour or disturbances’ in Greenwood Avenue between Friday and Sunday to come forward.

A post-mortem examination was due to be held later today to establish how he died.

Mr Carter’s next-of-kin have been informed of his death, police said.

A 49-year-old Southsea man was arrested on suspicion of murder at Portsmouth Central police station in Winston Churchill Avenue shortly before 11pm yesterday.

It is believed he had attended the police station to give officers information about Mr Carter’s death before he was arrested.

He is still in custody.

Meanwhile police are conducting house-to-house enquiries in the area as neighbours have reacted with shock to the new of Stan’s murder.

Forensics experts in blue and white suits were today examining the scene while a uniformed officer stood guard outside the property.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hampshire Major Investigation Team at Fratton station on 101.
