IT’s been revealed that the victim of the Greenwood Avenue murder was a retired policeman.

Detectives have until tonight to question a man arrested as part of their investigation into the death of Stanley Carter, known as Stan, at a house in Greenwood Avenue, Cosham

Mr Carter’s body was found shortly after 10pm on Sunday.

Detectives have now appealed for anyone with information about ‘suspicious behaviour or disturbances’ in Greenwood Avenue between Friday and Sunday to come forward.

A 49-year-old man from Southsea was arrested on suspicion of murder at Portsmouth Central police station in Winston Churchill Avenue shortly before 11pm on Sunday.

Last night police were given more time to question him, and they now have until 9.45pm tonight, although this may also be extended.

It is believed the suspect went to the police station to give officers information about Mr Carter’s death before he was arrested.

A post-mortem examination was due to be held yesterday to establish how Mr Carter, who is believed to have been aged in his 80s, died but the results have not been released.

Mr Carter’s next-of-kin have been informed of his death, police said.

Neighbours have spoken about Mr Carter, saying the pensioner kept ‘himself to himself’.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Hampshire Major Investigation Team at Fratton station on 101.
