FRAUDSTERS have been calling victims and telling them they are owed a council tax refund before conning them out of money.

A warning has been issued by Action Fraud, which said the criminals have been targeting people aged 60 and over in Sussex, and it’s likely they will start targeting neighbouring areas.

The fraudsters call to say people have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket and are entitled to a rebate. They normally say this rebate should be worth about £7,000.

Once the victim is convinced, the fraudster tells them to receive the rebate they will need to pay an administration fee between £60 and £350.

The victim makes the payment, but then is no longer able to contact the person.
