A PAEDOPHILE jailed for abusing three young boys had a nervous breakdown following his conviction last month.

Mike Green, from Hove, was found guilty of abusing teenage boys at speedway cycling clubs he set up in Havant and South London in the early 1980s.

He was jailed on Friday for nine years – eight for rape, one year for indecent assault, and a further year, to run concurrently, for a second indecent assault.

The jury failed to reach a verdict on a second rape charge after nearly 14 hours of deliberation, but the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to go for a retrial.

Speaking on his behalf at Hove Crown Court, barrister Jonathan Ray said Green, 71, still denied the abuse ever took place.

He added: ‘He is ashamed of his current situation.

‘He has no previous convictions, we’re dealing with historic matter.

‘He has had a nervous breakdown.

‘Up until last Friday, since his conviction, he didn’t know what day of the week it was.’
