THE government’s move to introduce life sentences to offenders of serious crime has been welcomed by Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt.

More dangerous criminals will be given life sentences and knife criminals will receive automatic prison sentences following the government announcement.

A two strikes and you’re out policy will also be introduced which will see a mandatory life sentence issued to anyone convicted of a second very serious sexual or violent crime. The release of dangerous sexual and violent offenders halfway through their sentence will be banned and those convicted of the most serious crimes in this category will not be released before the end of their sentence without Parole Board approval.

MP Penny Mordaunt said: ‘People across Portsmouth will feel safer knowing knives are being taken off our streets and serious and dangerous offenders are in prison for life.’
