POLICE put down a dangerous dog which had bitten four people after it escaped and ran loose around Bishop’s Waltham.

The white American Bulldog, which weighed around 70kg, was destroyed after it could not be caught safely yesterday afternoon, police said.

An appeal was put out on Facebook by the police, warning people of the dog.

A police statement said: ‘The dog had been voluntarily seized from the owner.

‘It had bitten four people and police were seeking a destruction order through the courts.

‘The dog escaped in Bishop’s Waltham and posed a risk to the public.

‘Because of the nature of the dog and the location it was found, it was not safe or practical to try to capture it.

‘Therefore, with public safety being the overriding factor, the dog was destroyed.’
