Derelict stadium bar is set alight

Violent crime reports in Hampshire double in four years

Have your say

FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle another blaze at Portsmouth’s derelict greyhound stadium – the third in less than a month.

A former bar – measuring about 10m by 5m – at the old stadium in Target Road, Tipner, was set alight shortly before 9.30pm on Monday.

Two crews from Cosham were called and quickly had the blaze under control. No-one was hurt.

But firefighters say residents are getting fed up with the problems there.

Station commander Dave Smith said: ‘The residents are fed up this site is still getting lots of fires. The fire service, working with the Safer Portsmouth Partnership and police have met to find out what we can do, working with the owner to reduce the fires.

‘We would like to see the whole site demolished.

‘Since April last year we have had around 14 calls. We are here almost every month - we’ve been here three times in just over two weeks.

‘We are getting a bit weary. Every time we are here means it ties up our resources unnecessarily. The owners are saying they are doing the best they can.’
