A FORMER firefighter who set up cameras in toilets to spy on strangers has been spared jail.

Andrew Dowden-Smith put up two cameras – one at Costa Coffee in London Road, Waterlooville, and the other at Costa Coffee in High Street, Cosham, to record people in the toilets.

The offences took place between October 1 and October 29 last year.

At Portsmouth Crown Court today, Dowden-Smith, of Bevan Road, Waterlooville, admitted two counts of voyeurism.

He resigned from his post with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service after the allegations came to light.

He has already been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register.

Today he was given a three-year community order plus supervision. This will include 200 hours of unpaid work and he must take part in a sex offenders’ group work programme.

Dowden-Smith was also ordered to pay £650 court costs.

Sentencing him, Judge Roger Hetherington, said: ‘It was an absolutely disgusting offence.’
