A FAMILY’S puppy was run over and killed after it escaped because a burglar left their garden gate open.

The female owner was at home in Mousehole Road, Paulsgrove, when she heard her dog barking at about 6.45am on Monday.

She went downstairs and opened the back door, looked into the garden but couldn’t see anything.

She then went back upstairs, leaving the door unlocked.

Fifteen minutes later she went back downstairs to find an Archos Android tablet, several purses and two digital cameras had gone.

She looked out of the side door and saw the thief running off.

With the garden gate left open, the family dog Ruby ran out and was hit by a car.

Detective Constable Amanda Waite said: ‘This is a truly horrible crime, made worse by the loss of the family dog. The Jack Russell puppy, Ruby, who had only been with the family for six months, was a much-loved pet and her owners are extremely upset and distressed by her loss.

‘I am appealing for anybody who has information relating to this incident to come forward.’

Anyone with information should call Det Con Waite at Fratton CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
