A DRINK-DRIVER who stole a car when he was more than twice the legal limit has been fined and banned from driving for three years.

Gavin O’Neill was stopped by police as he drove a black Ford Fiesta in Carless Close, Gosport.

A breathalyser test revealed he had 72 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – just over double the limit of 35mg.

A check on the vehicle also showed O’Neill had taken it and was not insured to drive the car.

The 32-year-old, of Furzehall Avenue, Fareham, initially denied a charge of drink-driving.

He was due to stand trial but he changed his plea to one of guilty when he appeared at Fareham Magistrates’ Court.

He admitted taking the car without the owner’s consent and driving without insurance.

Unemployed O’Neill was fined £265 and ordered to pay £100 in costs.

The magistrates ruled that the money will automatically be taken out of the benefits he receives.
