Driver set to stand trial over death crash

A DRIVER is to stand trial over the death of a moped rider.

Simon Boyd, 39, of Chaffinch Green, appeared on Tuesday at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court charged with causing death by driving without due care and attention.

It comes after he was charged following the death of Gary Martin, 52, of Gosport, who died after a crash between his Yamaha moped and a Mitsubishi pick-up truck.

The crash happened at the Kirpal Road junction with Eastern Road, Portsmouth, at around 6.20am on October 26 last year.

Boyd elected to be tried at Portsmouth Crown Court before a judge and jury.

Adjourning the case, magistrate Wendy Cheshire said: ‘You will be on unconditional bail until March 27 when you will need to be at Portsmouth Crown Court.’

Tributes were paid to Mr Martin after his death, with Pompey fans applauding on the 53rd minute of the team’s match on October 29, which would have been his birthday.
