A SOLDIER accused of being part of an international ring of paedophiles has said he is sickened by what he did.
Giving evidence today Daniel Bell, 27, said he only took part in explicit internet chats with another man who has admitted being part of the ring, because he was depressed.
The serving soldier, who was stationed at Thorney Island barracks, Emsworth, told Portsmouth Crown Court that he had been drinking heavily and was indulging in a fantasy.
When confronted with the record of what he wrote on a chat log Bell said: ‘Truthfully it looks nothing like anything I would do.
‘It doesn’t remind me of myself at all. It makes me hate myself.’
Robert Hathaway, 36, of Tyseley Road, Somers Town, Portsmouth, has already confessed to more than 40 offences relating to sex assaults on children and the possession of indecent images.
Bell denies two counts of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence, attempting to distribute an indecent image of children and two of possession of indecent photographs of children.
Melissa Noon, 30, of Tyseley Road, Somers Town, Portsmouth; Mark Day, 45, formerly of Gosport but now living in Whitefriars Meadow, Sandwich, Kent; Simon Hilton, 29, of Wolsey Road, Islington, London; and John Maddox, 47, of Ellis Avenue, Rainham, Essex, all deny charges relating to the abuse.
