Ferry firm told to remove '˜ladies' and '˜gents' loo signs after transgender woman's protest

Erin Bisson launched legal action against Condor Ferries after a member of staff told her to use a disabled loo.

She also complained thatthe use of words rather than symbols on toilets amounted to indirect discrimination.

The firm - which runs sailings between the Channel Island and Portsmouth and Poole - admitted discrimination at a hearing at Jersey’s Employment and Discrimination Tribunal.

Under gender discrimination laws introduced on Jersey in 2015, the tribunal found Ms Bisson’s case that she suffered direct and indirect discrimination because of her gender reassignment was ‘well-founded.’

Condor Ferries has already changed its male and female toilet signs after her complaint.

It asked Ms Bisson, from Jersey, to approve the changes to the toilet signs, which now have symbols representing men and women, and not words.
