A FIRE which destroyed a house that was still under construction in West Wittering is now believed to be arson.

Fire investigators have concluded the fire at the detached home off Berry Barn Lane near East Strand was not accidental.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to the property at 10.52pm on Sunday after receiving a number of calls from members of the public.

Fortunately no-one was hurt in the fire.

A total of 12 fire engines were sent to tackle the blaze. The external electrics and gas were isolated by the electricity and gas board.

Hotspots were inspected using a thermal imaging camera and dampened down.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: ‘The owners of the property were in London.

‘Fire crews had attended the fire well into the following morning, making sure the area was safe.

‘We had to protect adjacent buildings.’
