ARSONISTS who torched a flat in a late-night attack are being hunted by police.

The front door to the upstairs flat in London Road, Waterlooville, was forced open before it was set on fire.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the bedroom.

The rest of the flat was also smoke damaged.

However no-one was at the flat at the time and no-one was hurt.

Firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were called out to tackle the blaze, which happened between 10.30pm and 11pm on Sunday.

Police have only just released details of the arson attack.

PC Kathryn Wisdom from Waterlooville station, who is investigating, said: ‘This is a deliberate act of arson that could have seriously injured someone. Luckily the flat was empty at the time, and the fire service brought the fire under control before it could spread.

‘We are currently investigating exactly how the fire was started and would like to hear from anyone who may have seen someone in the area at the time acting suspiciously, or has any information about the person responsible for this criminal act.’

Anyone with information is asked to contact Waterlooville police station on 101 or 0845 0454545.

Alternatively call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555111.
