FORMER Pompey ace Nadir Belhadj is being investigated for bigamy, according to press reports in France.
International news outlet AFP reports a complaint was made by a woman claiming to be the footballer’s wife after discovering he had married another woman at the French embassy in Qatar in June last year.
The complaint was confirmed by prosecutor Virginie Deneux, following a story published in Le Progress regional daily newspaper, according to AFP.
It reports the woman, who is Algerian and lives in the Jura region in Eastern France, told investigators she married Mr Belhadj in 2009 in Organ, Algeria.
Prosecutors could move to annul Mr Belhadj’s alleged second marriage if investigators prove bigamy has taken place, according to AFP.
Mr Belhadj, pictured, an Algerian international, joined Portsmouth from French club Lens in 2009 after impressing in a loan spell. He scored a total of five goals during his two years at Fratton Park. The 29-year-old currently plays for Qatari side Al-Sadd and lifted the Asian Champions League with them in November.
