A COLLECTION has been set up for the family of a police officer who died while he was on duty.

Hampshire Police Federation has started the collection for the family of PC Steve Rawson who died after a collision between his unmarked police motorcycle and a car on Wednesday afternoon.

And Hampshire Constabulary has created an online book of condolences for people to leave messages in response to an outpouring of support for PC Rawson’s family.

The force has already received more than 2,000 messages on its Facebook page and through Twitter for PC Rawson.

The 40-year-old, who was married and had two young children, aged four years and seven months, was based at Fareham police station as part of his role in the serious crime directorate.

Hampshire Police Federation chairman John Apter said: ‘A lot of the messages from not only the emergency workers, but also from the public, that were coming into the federation, were asking how can we give something to the family?

‘Particularly when people heard he had left behind a wife and two very young children, experience has shown us that if we can set up an account, people will send something, even if it’s just a couple of pounds.

‘I’ve been with the family, and they are aware of what’s been done and by the outpouring of grief not only in Hampshire but across the country. They are absolutely devastated, but this has helped them at this difficult time.’

PC Rawson was involved in a collision with a silver BMW outside the Shell petrol station along Thomas Lewis Way in Southampton.

The BMW driver, a 35-year-old man sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries and remains at Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.

They are continuing their appeal for witnesses. Anyone with any information should contact Sgt Rob Heard at the road death investigation unit at Eastleigh on 101, quoting Operation Candour.

Contributions to the collection can be made by bank transfer through NatWest Bank, sort code 55-81-26, account number 80962246, named PCC for Hampshire and using reference: PPPSR

Or if you prefer to send a cheque make it payable to: PCC for Hampshire PPPSR, and send it to The Chief Constable, Police HQ, West Hill, Winchester, SO22 5DB
