THE family of a man assaulted by eight people in the street have said they are shaken by the attack.

Hampshire police were called to Gazelle Close, in Rowner, Gopsort, at 1.28am on New Year’s Day to reports of screaming, shouting and a large fight.

Those kids would not have stopped if the police didn’t show up. Like vultures around him

Initially, it was thought up to 10 people were involved but officers said eight attacked the man.

He had gone out to ask the assailants – whose identities and ages are not known – to be quiet.

Now the partner of the victim, who suffered bruises and scratches, has told of the horror attack.

She said: ‘He went out as he was sick of the endless disturbances we have here from kids virtually every night swearing and causing a commotion, not to break up a fight.

‘Those kids would not have stopped if the police didn’t show up – like vultures around him.

‘We’re both still shaken.’

It happened just over an hour after thousands celebrated the new year across the area.

Police said they were told the man had been splitting up a fight in the street.

Speaking on Friday, PC Karen Lane, from Hampshire police’s force control room said: ‘There was a bit of a melee in the street and there’s a report of a male being assaulted.

‘Lots of shouting and screaming.

‘Then we turned up, we had one running away from us at one point.’

The group thought to have attacked the man were walking in Howe Road toward Pegasus Close.

PC Lane added: ‘The aggrieved has seen some males fighting in the street, gone out to stop it and they’ve assaulted him.

‘He’s received cuts and bruises.’

No-one has been arrested over the assault. Police are investigating.
