A MAN has admitted benefit fraud after he failed to inform the council that he had £16,000 in the bank.

David Johnson, 60, formerly of Heritage Way in Gosport, appeared at Fareham Magistrates’ Court after he received more than £9,000 in Jobseekers’ Allowance and Housing Benefit.

He was sentenced to a 12-month community order with a requirement to complete 150 hours’ unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay a contribution of £75 towards prosecution costs.

Before attending court, the outstanding payment had been paid back in full to both Gosport Borough Council and the Department for Work & Pensions.
