WITNESSES are wanted to help find a man who stole a woman’s handbag in Gosport.

The thief entered a building at Fort Brockhurst, in Gunners Way, and stole a bag belonging to a 46-year-old.

She chased the burglar across the parade ground and onto the road but lost him.

It happened between 4pm and 4.30pm on Wednesday.

An elderly man who was passing got out of a silver car and chased the thief.

He returned shortly after with the handbag, and its contents, saying the offender dropped it on the grass verge.

Police want to trace the elderly man as he may have more information about the thief who was white, under 40, with almost shaved hair.

He was of average height and medium build and wore a grey, long-sleeved top. He carried a green canvas bag.

Police also want to find the driver of a dark blue N-registration Peugeot which pulled up alongside the fleeing man.
