Hundreds of protesters marched from Guildhall Square up to Commercial Road and back again chanting ‘Free Free Palestine’.

Many were carrying placards and banners which read ‘Freedom for Palestine’.

EDL members gathered in a corner of Guildhall Square chanting and waving England flags.

Jenny Flintoft, who is secretary and chairwoman of the Portsmouth and South Downs branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: ‘It was pretty good. We didn’t get held up by EDL like we did last time.

‘The police foresaw what they might do and they stopped it.

‘I was very pleased.’

Hampshire Police said no arrests were made.

Last month, EDL members gatecrashed an anti-war demonstration in the city.
