The group set upon the 27-year-old victim as he walked along Sultan Road, in Buckland, Portsmouth.

He suffered serious injuries to his face and body in what police say was a totally unprovoked attack.

The assault happened on between 2.30am and 3.30am on June 21, but police have only just released the details.

Detectives have carried out house-to-house inquiries but are now appealing for more help to bring the attackers to justice.

‘We’re looking to identify a group of men involved in this vicious and unprovoked assault.

The ringleader of the group was a white man aged between 25 and 28, who was about 5ft 10in. He was stocky and had short hair.

He wore a white, long-sleeved Adidas top with purple stripes across the chest.
