POLICE are on the hunt for a man who attempted to steal plug-in air fresheners from a shop.

The would-be thief dropped the items after he was challenged by staff at The Co-op store, in Northern Parade, Hilsea.

Officers have launched an investigation into the incident because the man may have been abusive to staff.

A CCTV image of the man has been released in a bid to identify him.

The incident took place between 6.15pm and 6.25pm on Monday, April 23. The value of the items was believed to be around £40.

PC Nick Jackson, of Fratton Police Station, said: ‘We are keen to identify this man.

‘It is believed that he may have been abusive to staff at the shop who confronted him.

‘Shop staff should not have to be treated this way.

‘We would ask anyone with information to get in touch.’

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who recognises the man is asked to call PC Jackson on 101.
