A SHOPLIFTER told a court: ‘I know I’ve done wrong.’

But District Judge Anthony Callaway sitting at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court said: ‘It’s the story of your life isn’t it madam?’

Stephanie Sopp, 26, of Kingston Road, Fratton, Portsmouth, pleaded guilty to stealing a £4.99 bottle of wine from Tesco in Craswell Street, Portsmouth.

She took the wine on June 23 and was spotted three days later on CCTV. She said police said she would be cautioned.

Judge Callaway said: ‘What’s that got to do with the price of fish? You haven’t got a caution.’

He then handed her a two-year conditional discharge, ordered her to pay £4.99 compensation to the shop, £85 prosecution costs and a £150 criminal courts charge.
