A MAN who possessed extreme pornography has been spared jail after being caught with illegal material.

David Sibthorp, 62, of Bedford Close, Havant, pleaded guilty to possessing 263 images, seven video clips and one video tape.

Portsmouth Crown Court heard the material had been obtained before it became illegal under the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008.

Stephen Smyth, defending, said: ‘At the time it wasn’t illegal and he kept them because he didn’t realise they had become illegal.’

Judge Peter Henry gave Sibthorp a 36-month community supervision order and told him to attend a sex offender treatment programme.

He said: ‘The images are extremely revolting and disgusting.

‘I think you have a significant problem with pornography.

‘Society would be best protected not by sending you to prison, but by putting you on this course and it is going to assist you with recognising this addiction.’
