POLICE and the Coastguard officials have been stood down in their search for two boys who were reported missing on a popular tourist beach.

Solent Coastguard were alerted by lifeguards on Ryde beach on the Isle of Wight this lunchtime that the boys, aged six and eight, were missing.

A Hampshire police spokesman said the force was alerted at 1.21pm by Solent Coastguard and said the boys were last seen near local landmark Appley Tower.

But following a full search of the area and an appeal for the parents of the boys to get in contact, rescuers were stood down at 4.15pm.

The boys were said to have been seen last near to Appley Town on Ryde beach at about 12pm

A Coastguard rescue team, helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent and lifeboat involved in the search.

Hampshire Police are now investigating the incident.
