A MAN has this evening been charged with assault and threatening people with a knife after a major incident at a Virgin Media shop in the centre of Portsmouth

Hampshire police confirmed a 20-year-old man from Portsmouth is being held in custody tonight, following a three-hour armed stand-off inside the Virgin Media store yesterday.

He will appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning.

He has been charged with threatening a number of people with a knife in a public place, affray and assaulting a man in his 40s by throwing an alcohol gel bottle.

A three-hour stand-off took place at about midday when a man burst into the shop.

Dozens of armed police officers, with riot shields and police dogs, surrounded the building, at the northern end of the busy shopping precinct.

Police were applauded as they escorted the man from the building and the cordon was lifted.

The force also said it would like to thank members of the public and businesses in the area for their co-operation and patience.
